Urgent Action Needed to Avoid Power Disruptions, Update Prepaid Meters
Eskom urges customers to recode prepaid meters by November 24, 2024, to avoid power cuts.
Prepaid Meter Deadline Looms
South African electricity provider Eskom has issued a critical deadline: all prepaid meter users must recode their devices by November 24, 2024, to avoid being cut off from electricity services. This nationwide initiative impacts 6.9 million prepaid meters, with 300,000 devices still requiring updates.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Why the Update is Needed:
The recoding aligns meters with Key Revision Number (KRN) 2, required by global standards. Without this, meters won’t recognize electricity tokens, leaving homes without power. - Simple DIY Process:
Users can complete the update independently by purchasing prepaid tokens from authorized vendors. Two sets of 20-digit codes will be provided to enter into the meter, completing the transition seamlessly. - No Extensions Expected:
Eskom confirmed that no deadline extensions would be granted. All previously purchased tokens must be used before recoding, as they’ll expire post-update. - Support and Resources:
Customers can access help via Eskom’s call center (0860 037 566), website, and chatbot services. Eskom has also rolled out public awareness campaigns to simplify the process.
Failure to recode your meter will disrupt access to electricity, adding unnecessary stress and expense to households. Act now to secure uninterrupted service..
