Caught at Beitbridge Border Post: What’s in His Bag?

Man Arrested with Explosives at Beitbridge Border Post.

A foreign national aged 53 has been arrested at the Beitbridge Border Post for possession of explosive substances.

In the most recent case, at Beitbridge Border Post, a 53-year-old foreign national was arrested after trying to smuggle explosives. The suspect is expected in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The arrest speaks volumes of security problems that still prevail at the South African border. Only the day before, the Border Management Authority (BMA) was launched in Musina, Limpopo, to improve border protection and address cross-border offenses.

Addressing the nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa stressed the need for ‘’security of borders’’ by noting that in the country, ‘’border control has been seriously lacking,’’ resulting in corruption and organized crime, inter alia.

The advent of BMA is a good way of solving these problems. However, this arrest is a clear indication that securing the border of South Africa is still a major problem for the authorities. Therefore, it is wishy-washy for the BMA and other law enforcement agencies to comb the nation in order to curb such illegalities.

How efficient do you consider the new Border Management Authority? To what extent do you think it will help in decreasing cross-border crimes? Don’t forget to share your opinions in the comments section below!
