Swift Arrests Needed Following Nurses’ Abduction and Assault
Concerns for the police to arrest perpetrators on the spot increases following the Abduction and rape of two nurses at gunpoint at Ga-Chuene clinic in Limpopo.
A recent incident where two nurses were kidnapped and raped at the Ga-Chuene clinic reminds everyone in South Africa about the problem. It happened on 11/01/ 2025, when the gunmen stormed the nurses during the night shift with big Arcs. Health unions are calling on authorities to take immediate action to protect health care employees.
As it was reported, the clinic is still shut down while the probe is underway. The Health & Other Services Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (Hospersa) says: ‘It is deeply worrying that an incident of this nature has occurred’. They condemned any situation where healthcare professionals are endangered for their lives while attending to the communities.
The statistics reveal an increase in attacks on health care staff, thus this case constitutes a worrying phenomenon. According to TAC, there were more than a hundred incidents of violence against nurses that were reported in South Africa only in 2023. This has a great implication to the management of healthcare facilities since it points to the need for better security measures.
People all over the community have stood up in defense of the two victims and are seeking justice for them. Local people were protesting outside the clinic and one of them stated during the protest: “We cannot allow this to happen again.” The call for action is clear: frequent arrest have to be effected in other to curb the ongoing attacks on health care personnel.
