A Learnership is a vocational education and training program that connects organized study and work experience in order to gain a recognized certification. It combines theory and practical practice to provide a qualification that is listed on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Learnerships are specifically tied to a certain occupation or line of business, such as truck/bus driver (National Certificate Professional Driving).

To graduate from a learnership, you must finish both a theoretical course and practical training in the workplace. The workplace component of the degree consists of hands-on, practical learning under the supervision of a mentor, whilst the theoretical component is offered by an education and training provider. Together, they constitute an integrated and complete learning curriculum.

SETAs monitor learnerships and ensure that they provide credentials for a specific vocation or area of the economy. All 21 SETAs have created NQF-aligned courses to enable you earn recognised qualifications while gaining on-the-job experience.

A Learnership often includes 120+ credits or 1200+ “notional” hours of instruction, comparable to a one-year full-time college or university term.

If all of these tasks are completed, students will get an NQF-registered qualification that is nationally recognized. They will receive a certificate indicating their certification and area of skill development.

Employment is not assured, but once you have successfully finished your leadership, you will be in a much better position to sell yourself because you will now have both theoretical and work experience.

Learnership programs can help you get the skills and professional experience you need to further your career or start your own business.
