University of Johannesburg Leads 2024 South African University Rankings
Read about how the University of Johannesburg became number one South African University in the Sub-Saharan Africa 2024 University Ranking after other universities.
To everyone’s amazement, the University of Johannesburg is ranked first in the 2024 Time Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings. It has upped this year to a third position, pushing the University of the Witwatersrand which is its closest competitor out of position three.

South Africa is dominating the list and has all the leading three positions. The University of Pretoria switched positions with the University of Johannesburg to the second place in the previous year’s ranking, and the University of the Witwatersrand placed third.
This ranking measures universities according to teaching quality, research productivity rating and social impact. The upward trend is clear which shows that UJ has directed a lot of effort in these areas.
However, it is important to point out that the rankings produced here may differ when other factors are employed. As an example, in the most recent QS World University Rankings, the University of Cape Town is placed 173rd in the world and is, therefore, the only South African university within the top 200 on that list.
